The Calendar

A calendar on the wall displays the date, Sunday, February 1, 2009. Hanging beside it is a thermometer which indicates the outdoor temperature is minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit or minus 23 degrees Celsius.

Brother Theophyle whines to Rabbit, “Please lay your eyes on that mercury. Ouch! That's what I call frigid. And it’s been there since December. You know what I think we ought to do, don’t you?”

Rabbit replies, “No. What do you think we should do?”

In the next panel, Theo explains, “It’s really quite simple: We re-write the calendar. The mistake was putting all the cold months in winter and all the hot months in summer. Instead of bunched up like that, they should be mixed. Like, have January and February follow June, and July and August follow December. That will warm winter, and cool summer. It’s much more sensible. Think of the money saved on heating and air conditioning. I tell you, it’s brilliant. It’s a wonder no one’s ever thought of it before.”

Rabbit replies, “Yes, it’s a wonder.”

To one side is a black bear, who asks, “And just when would I hibernate?”
