Visitors Browser Survey

As you are undoubtedly aware, since the creation of the World Wide Web, there has flowed a continuing stream of new and improved tools and techniques for designing web pages, ranging from simple frames to JavaScript and assorted Dynamic HTML like Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), layers, VBScript, and others, not to mention Java applets, and who knows what else is yet to come.

All of this is lots of fun and full of potential. The problem is that not all browsers -- like Netscape's Navigator, Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Opera, AOL's version of Internet Explorer, WebTV's software -- understand and interpret these changes in the same way (if at all).

As a consequence, the way websites -- like The Zoo Fence -- display on your computer depends not only on how they were designed to display but also on how the browser you are using is able to display them.

Here's a simple example: These words are intended to change color when you pass your mouse pointer over them. But that may or may not work depending upon what browser you are using.

We want The Zoo Fence to offer a good experience for all our visitors. Accordingly, we have tried to ensure that all TZF pages open, if not exactly identically, at least satisfactorily in a variety of browsers. We hope that is the case. In this survey, we are seeking to gather a little information about that, and we hope you will be willing to help us.

This suvey places no "cookies" on your computer, and asks no personal questions (well, maybe a couple). So, if you can spare a few more minutes, please continue. On the other hand, if you would just like to be left alone, click here, and you will be returned to our Home Page.

There is a "Comments" box at the bottom of this page where you can leave any comments or suggestions you may wish to make.

1) First, please tell us which computer operating system you are using:
Windows 98 Windows 95 Windows 3x Windows NT Windows 2000
Mac/Apple Linux Something Else I'm not sure

2) Now, what browser are you using? For example, if you are using AOL's browser, please say so, and tell us what version of AOL you have. Or, if you are using Navigator or Internet Explorer, please type the name and version number in the box below. (In most cases, to determine the version number, click on "Help" at the top of your screen, then "About". Then, to return here, use your browser's "BACK" button or, if a new window has opened, close it).

If you would like to update your browser:
Netscape Navigator ver. 4.7 at http://www.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html? (download free or order disk)
Microsofit Internet Explorer ver. 5.01at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp? (download free or order disk)
Opera ver. 3.61at http://www.opera.com (free trial, pay to keep)

3) How do you ordinarily get online?
Dial into an ISPAmerica Online WebTV Office Network
Public Library or Cyber Cafe Prodigy Compuserve Other I'm not sure

4) Now, we ask whether your browser supports frames. If you are not sure, you need to try to open a framed page, like TZF's Letters page. What we're going to do is open a new window, in which TZF's Letters feature will appear. When it does, please observe what you see, then close that window. This window will remain open, so you can continue with the survey. Okay, to open the Letters window, please click here. And then tell us what happens:
A page opens with a menu on the left and a funny looking monk on the right
A page opens proclaiming "Apparently your browser is unable to open frames"
I did as you asked, but nothing happened (Cyberspace is paved with glitches!)

The next several questions are about the way your browser supports Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
5) What color are the words "Please Help Us" at the top of this page?
Red Blue Some other color Those words do not appear at the top of my screen

6) When you pass your mouse pointer over these words, what happens?
They turn chartreuse (or whatever color that is) Nothing happens (they do not change color)

7) Here, we ask how this question displays on your screen. It will either have the same margins as the other questions (that is, the same amount of blank space to the left and right as the other questions), or wider margins (that is, more blank space to the left and right than the other questions). Also, depending on your browser, the four check boxes below this question may or may not have wider margins.
Yes, question #7 itself does have wider left and right margins than the other questions
No, question #7 looks the same as the other questions
------
These four check boxes under #7 are indented; they display further from the left than the answers to other questions.
These check boxes are not indented. They display as close to the left margin as the answers to other questions.

Now, let's find out how your browser reacts to JavaScript.

Pass Your Mouse Pointer Below Here, Please

A JavaScript message should appear here

8) When you pass your mouse pointer over the blank space above this line, does anything happen?
The words "Thank you for your help" appear Nothing happens

9) Please click on this "Click" button, and then tell us what happens.
A little window opens asking me to click on another button Nothing happens

10) Now, please place (but do not click) your mouse pointer over the little house (which is TZF's home icon) below this line, and see what, if anything, appears in the status bar at the bottom left of your screen.

The way home!
The Way Home!

The words "Home of The Zoo Fence - http://zoofence.com" appear in the status bar
The URL "http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/4735/index.html#menu" appears there
Nothing appears in the status bar
"Status bar"? What's that, some kind of private club for the rich and famous?

Finally, two sort of personal questions. First, we are considering -- just considering -- adding music to some of TZF's pages. So, we wonder how many of our visitors have (and use) sound cards & speakers on their computers.
11) Is your computer equipped with a sound card? Yes No I don't know
If so, do you listen to music at websites? Often Sometimes Rarely Never

12) Finally, a little more personal, we wonder how often you visit The Zoo Fence.
This is my first visit
I have been here a few times
I have been here many times
TZF does not need to know this (You will be pleased to learn that some at TZF agree with you!)

That's it! Thank you very much for your help. If you would like to leave any comments or suggestions, please type them into the box below. We will leave this survey posted for a couple of months. If you would like to be informed of what we learn from it, please say so in the "Comments" box, and leave us your e-mail address (which we will not share, sell, or otherwise exchange with anyone).

When you are done, please click the "Send" button. And be careful: The "Erase" button erases everything, not just the comments in the "Comments" box.
