Walking The Path with Brother Theophyle

On This Very Site

Brother Theophyle is hard at work constructing a marble marker. Over his shoulder we can read the first few words he has chiseled into the stone. They are, "On this very site ..."

When he is done, Theo steps aside to admire his handiwork.

Now, we can see the finished sign, which reads in full, "On this very site in 1502 something happened".

Rabbit, admiring Theo's work, observes, "Very nice". Then, Rabbit wonders, "Now, I suppose you omitted just what happened because ... "

Before Rabbit is done speaking, Theo finishes the sentence by saying, "... nobody remembers".
